Farm GST: Zero-Rated Does Not Mean Every Purchase Is Tax-Free

A grain farm may make zero-rated sales while paying GST on other business purchases. Good bookkeeping preserves that distinction, because a zero-rated sale remains a taxable supply at 0% and is different from an exempt supply.

Check the actual supply

CRA guidance identifies qualifying agricultural products and equipment. For example, specified farm tractors designed for agricultural use qualify when they meet the stated power requirement, and qualifying combines are listed. A machine lease does not automatically receive the treatment of an outright sale.

The records should capture the item, specifications and transaction type instead of applying one tax code to everything labelled farm equipment. Accessories supplied separately can also require a different assessment from qualifying accessories supplied as part of a machine. Keep the complete agreement rather than relying only on the payment receipt.

Worked example: zero-rated grain and taxable repair costs

Illustrative example: a GST-registered regional grain farm makes $72,000 of verified zero-rated grain sales. GST collected on those sales is $0. It also receives a $4,400 repair invoice on which $220 GST is properly charged. Assuming the repair supports its commercial activities and all input-tax-credit conditions are met, that $220 can enter the eligible GST credit calculation.

There is no GST credit to claim on the $72,000 grain sale or on a purchase where no GST was charged. A separate $30,000 zero-rated equipment purchase would therefore not create a $1,500 credit merely because ordinary GST is 5%. The return must use actual tax and eligibility, not an assumed percentage of every purchase.

Keep a tax-code explanation with the document

A short explanation can identify why the supply is zero-rated, where the specifications are recorded and who checked an uncertain item. For a purchase with mixed business and personal use, the supporting use information is also relevant to the credit assessment. A software code alone cannot establish entitlement.

PST is a separate Saskatchewan assessment. A GST-zero-rated item may require its own PST exemption evidence, while services or general supplies can have different treatment. Keep the federal and provincial reasoning in distinct fields or notes.

Prepare the review package

Before the reporting period closes, inspect unusual purchases and any invoices with unexpected tax. Ask the supplier to clarify errors rather than silently creating a credit in the books.

  • Keep grain contracts and settlement documents supporting the nature of the sale.
  • Retain equipment specifications and sale or lease agreements.
  • Use the tax actually charged and assess input-tax-credit eligibility.
  • Record the PST decision separately and flag mixed-use items.
